Bibliography
PolyLC do PRIONS Recent outbreaks of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease in Europe have highlighted the need to develop a method to identify pathogenic prion proteins in the blood of animals and humans. In collaboration with Dr. Mary Jo Schmerr
of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), PolyLC has helped
to develop the first practical test for pathogenic prion proteins in
blood. Experimentally, the test has given positive results in a variety
of TSE (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy) diseases, including:
PolyLC’s HPLC columns of PolyHYDROXYETHYL
Aspartamide permit the isolation of pure pathogenic prion protein from
extracts from brain and other tissues of diseased animals. The protein
is obtained free of detergent with recovery >90%, in a form that readily
forms complexes with anti-prion antibodies
